SPRINT MILANO ART BOOK FAIR 2026 + SURPRIZE AWARD

From Friday, Nov. 27, the 14th edition of the entire ABF will be activated in a single location. More than 230 local and international publishers will join us from 35 countries to present zines, books, magazines, and vice versa, bridging self-publishing, independent houses, and artists' projects, with editions involving different languages – photography, graphic design, illustration, typography, criticism, research, poetry – in a polyphonic rhythm between image, sign, and word and everything in between.
Within this contemporary dimension, there are also several voices dealing in rare/second-hand material to fuel a cross-disciplinary approach to collecting for both experts or absolute beginners.
During the opening night will be announced the selected recipient for the award SURPRIZE Supports Publishing Practice, the fifth edition of the prize open to all ABF participants. The recognition contributes to the production of a new editorial project to be printed by 2027, promoting research and independent experimentation.
Starting this year, SPRINT is hosted at Dropcity, a Centre for Architecture and Design occupying a series of street-level tunnels beneath the tracks of Milan Central Station.

SCREENING | FORTUNATE RICERCHE

'Where the lines have been drawn, the series Fortunate Ricerche [Fortunate Researches] emerges from the surface. An audiovisual series structured into ten concise episodes. The series begins with the discovery of fragments of ancient glass, varying in color, shape, and craftsmanship. Throughout the episodes, the sound and choreographic composition echoes the images of the fragments, overlaying archaeological photographs and the backdrops of skatepark ramps and slopes, in a relationship of similarities'.
The research also takes the form of an artist's edition produced by SPRINT, printed in Risograph by The Riso Club, which will be launched during the ABF.
BAROKTHEGREAT is a group founded in 2008 by performer and choreographer Sonia Brunelli and musician and composer Leila Gharib, based in Verona. Their practice stages glimpses of interior worlds, creating imaginary scenarios that unfold along the tensions between sound composition and choreography. Architecture and space become living objects and are treated as active elements of the performance.

EXHIBITION | MORNING ANXIETY

Following the collaboration in 2018, SPRINT welcomed back artist and archivist Guadalupe Rosales, whose practice gathers collective storytelling to bring forward what the public record and official memory tend to leave out. Departing from their new publishing projects, their contribution traces cultural narratives of marginalization and resilience across bodies, objects, walls, and public space.
The book East of the River: A Memoir of Los Angeles Girlhood [Random House, New York, 2026] is at once an altar to a past era and a map toward the future. Meanwhile, Tumbados: Lowriding Memories and Cruising Futures [MIT Press, Cambridge, MA, 2026] functions as a candid, timely celebration of lowrider culture, examining the politics of car cruising through the Latinx and diasporic experience. Accompanying East of the River is the zine Roll Call [designed by Bob Dominguez], featuring paths connected to the ’90s Californian rave scene. Together, these titles contribute to exploring Rosales' key concepts and their dense multimedia archive.
Guadalupe Rosales is a multidisciplinary artist who draws on archives to create immersive and sensorial spaces that activate memory and evoke collective experience. She is best known for creating community-generated projects @veteranas_and_rucas and @map_pointz that respond to the under/misrepresentation and historical erasure of Latin@/x communities. Her work has been shown at the Museo Universitario del Chopo, the Dallas Museum of Art, Haus der Kunst, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Hammer Museum, Storefront for Art and Architecture and recently, the 61st La Biennale di Venezia.

EXHIBITION | ANTIPODE IN COLLABORATION WITH COMPULSIVE ARCHIVE: PUNK ACROSS THE BORDERS
UNDERGROUND AND DIY CULTURES FROM SWANA AND BEYOND

ANTIPODE is a self-organized and independent zine-book series documenting underground punk, hardcore, and DIY cultures from different regions of the world. Each volume focuses on a specific geography, building a collective documentation through the voices of those directly involved – bands, labels, collectives, fanzines, and artists – without external mediation.
Rooted in an anti-colonial approach, ANTIPODE brings attention to scenes that remain underrepresented or misrepresented within UK - and US - centred histories of punk: contributors speak in their own words, through their own languages and forms of expression.
For SPRINT26, ANTIPODE in collaboration with COMPULSIVE ARCHIVE presents records, cassettes, photographs and videos from contemporary communities across SWANA [Southwest Asia and North Africa] and its diasporas. Extending the book series into space, the exhibition follows the material traces and transnational connections through which these cultures circulate.
ANTIPODE is an independent publishing project and label initiated in Istanbul by Doğa Sultan. It works across zines, visual culture, events and music releases within punk and hardcore networks.
COMPULSIVE ARCHIVE is a Milan-based archival space by Giulia Vallicelli, dedicated to researching, preserving and publicly activating lesser-known histories of punk publishing, with a focus on Italian Riot Grrrl and Queercore fanzines from the 1990s and 2000s.

What if, instead of copies sold or number of citations, we measured books by the bonds they help form? Bikini Books’ latest project, Fem Pub: Cold Type, Hot Politics 1960–1990, brings together fifty-nine feminist periodicals from thirty-nine different countries, introduced by forty-nine authors. Its 336 pages, filled with thousands of images, came together thanks to an extraordinary number of contributors, archivists, historians, designers, friends, institutions, and individuals who believed in the project's worth. In this talk, co-editors Nina Paim and Sera van de Water will shed light on the entire process: how the book was conceived, financed, edited, designed, produced, and now marketed and circulated, but most importantly, how they see editing as a form of gathering.
Bikini Books is a feminist design publisher based in Porto, founded in 2023, that publishes critical, accessible, and finely crafted nonfiction at the intersection of cultural history, journalism, and creative writing. They also host regular workshops and events on design politics.

EXHIBITION | THE MOST BEAUTIFULL SWISS BOOKS
in collaboration with Istituto Svizzero
The Most Beautiful Swiss Books will display the seventeen titles awarded on the occasion of the prestigious competition held by the Federal Office of Culture that brings together the best of Swiss publishing. Each year, the award celebrates the work of the most talented book designers and their outstanding achievements in book production and art, highlighting and promoting high-quality works that reflect contemporary trends. A traveling exhibition is organized annually in Switzerland and abroad as a promotional measure to share and consolidate skills related to book design. What is a Swiss book? A product is considered a Swiss book if it meets at least one of the following three criteria: The book was designed by a Swiss designer, the publishing/printing house has its headquarters in Switzerland.

The books will be on view during SPRINT Milano ABF hosted at Spazio Maiocchi and after will move to Ten Thousand Feet, an independent creative studio and a physical space where intimate events related to design, publishing, photography, and illustration take place.
